Overview

Family Life in Benalmádena

Benalmádena sits right in the middle of the Costa del Sol. It neatly divides into three areas; each offers a rather different way of life for families moving here. Right by the sea, Benalmádena Costa has the well-known Puerto Marina and long beaches. Further inland, Arroyo de la Miel is the commercial hub. It has a train station, handy for Málaga and Fuengirola. Up the mountain, you'll find Benalmádena Pueblo. A traditional white village, with wonderful sea views.

For families, Benalmádena strikes a good balance. You get plenty of infrastructure, but without the heavy tourist focus of some other towns nearby. You are only 12 minutes from the Almitak development in Las Lagunas de Mijas. This gives you easy access to the whole school corridor, whilst still enjoying the character of an older Spanish town.

Schools and Education Infrastructure

Benalmádena has two main international schools. Benalmádena International College (BIC) and The British College of Benalmádena both follow the British curriculum, from early years right up to A-Levels. They are both near the coast. This makes the school run fairly simple if you live in Torrequebrada or Arroyo de la Miel.

If you chose Almitak in Las Lagunas de Mijas as your base, the drive to these Benalmádena schools takes around 12 to 15 minutes on the A-7 motorway. Or, living in Benalmádena means you can reach the group of international schools in Mijas Costa within 15 minutes.

Family-Friendly Amenities and Parks

Benalmádena is well-known for its family attractions. The old Tivoli World site (it's changing right now, but a big local landmark), the Stupa of Enlightenment in the Pueblo, and the Teleférico, a cable car up Calamorro mountain; they all offer weekend activities on your doorstep.

Parque de la Paloma is probably the town's best feature for families with young children. It covers 200,000 square metres right in the town centre. You'll find free-roaming rabbits and peacocks, big playgrounds, and a lake. It's often where expat and local families meet up on Sunday afternoons.

Healthcare and Support Services

The town has good healthcare options. Hospital Vithas Xanit Internacional is a large private hospital, situated near Benalmádena Pueblo. It's quite popular with expat families; they have many English-speaking paediatricians and specialists. Most family health insurance policies, from providers like Sanitas or Adeslas, will cover care there.

Property and Relocation Strategy

When you look at property in Benalmádena, families usually consider Torrequebrada (it's quieter, residential, and close to the international schools), Arroyo de la Miel (great for walking everywhere and train access), or the lower slopes of the Pueblo (you get better views, it's quieter, but you will need a car).

Many families find that Benalmádena is lovely for weekend visits, but the daily school runs and activities might be easier a little further west. That's why Almitak, in Las Lagunas de Mijas, has become a popular base. It offers families the safety and new-build quality they're looking for (an A+ energy rating, modern insulation), whilst keeping Benalmádena's attractions just a 12-minute drive away.

Questions answered

What families ask
before they move.

What are the best neighbourhoods for families in Benalmádena?

+

Torrequebrada comes highly recommended for families. It's close to the international schools and has quieter residential streets. Arroyo de la Miel suits you if you prefer not to use a car, with its train station and excellent walking options. Benalmádena Pueblo offers a traditional village feel, although you'll need a car for the school run.

How far is Benalmádena from the Almitak development?

+

Benalmádena is about a 12-minute drive from Almitak, in Las Lagunas de Mijas, using the A-7 motorway. This makes it quite convenient to live at Almitak and still use Benalmádena's schools, parks, and healthcare facilities.

Are there good international schools in Benalmádena?

+

Yes. Benalmádena has Benalmádena International College and The British College of Benalmádena. Both follow the British curriculum. Also, the group of schools in Mijas Costa is only 10 to 15 minutes away.

What is Parque de la Paloma?

+

Parque de la Paloma is a large, 200,000-square-metre park, right in the centre of Benalmádena. You'll find a big lake, several playgrounds, cafes, and free-roaming animals, like rabbits and peacocks. It's a main centre for family life here.

Is Benalmádena safe for families with young children?

+

Yes, Benalmádena is generally very safe. Residential areas like Torrequebrada and the Pueblo have low crime rates and a good community feel. The coastal strip gets busier with tourists in summer, but the family areas stay secure all year round.

Which hospital do expat families use in Benalmádena?

+

Most expat families, especially those with private health insurance, use Hospital Vithas Xanit Internacional. It's a large, modern private hospital with a 24-hour emergency department and many English-speaking paediatricians.

How long does it take to get to Málaga Airport from Benalmádena?

+

Málaga Airport is usually 15 to 20 minutes away by car. You can also catch the C-1 commuter train straight from Arroyo de la Miel to the airport. That takes about 20 minutes and is very reliable.

Can I rely on public transport in Benalmádena?

+

If you live in Arroyo de la Miel or Benalmádena Costa, public transport is very good. The C-1 train connects you to Fuengirola, the airport, and Málaga city centre. Local buses run frequently. If you live up in the Pueblo, you will probably want a car.

What is the cost of living for a family in Benalmádena?

+

The cost of living is broadly similar to Mijas Costa. A family of four might budget between €4,000 and €4,800 per month. This would cover rent or mortgage, international school fees, private healthcare, groceries, and utilities.

Are there good activities for teenagers in Benalmádena?

+

Yes. Teenagers often use the local sports facilities, the skate park near Parque de la Paloma, and of course, the beaches. The train line offers older teenagers safe, independent access to Fuengirola and Málaga for shopping and socialising.
